GREAT LOVE ACROSS THE TAIWAN STRAITS

#Food, clothing and comforters were distributed to flood victims in Duchang, Poyang and Yugan. One elementary school, Cailing Tzu Chi Secondary School, and two Tzu Chi new villages were constructed.

#Baichu Tzu Chi Elementary School was constructed in Yichun. Education subsidies, scholarships, desks and chairs were provided for the school.

Jiangxi Province had been afflicted by a hailstorm which seriously damaged local school buildings. After sending a team to inspect the affected schools, the foundation decided to build a secondary school in Cailing Township, Duchang County, to provide a good learning environment for students from sixteen nearby farming villages. It was the first secondary school to be built in that area.

The foundation for the Cailing Tzu Chi High School was laid in June 1995, and the inauguration ceremony was held on December 25, 1996. After discussions with school authorities, Tzu Chi people time and again visited the school to conduct social services and cultural exchange programs for the students. The purpose of the programs was not only to help the school nurture its students, but also to implant the Tzu Chi spirit of "kindness, compassion, joy and unselfish giving" into students' minds, so that the cycle of love and goodness would come full circle. Students did well at their schoolwork, and they also put the spirit of Great Love into practice by helping in Tzu Chi distribution activities.

In addition to relief distributions held in Poyang and Duchang counties, the foundation also built Tzu Chi villages in Duchang County and Xiangxi Township. The villages were completed and inaugurated in December 1996, bringing new hope to villagers. It was our sincerest hope that the love of Taiwanese people could stay forever in the hearts of our fellow countrymen in mainland China.
