GREAT LOVE ACROSS THE TAIWAN STRAITS

HENAN
Warmth in the Cold Winter

Relief items:

#Food, money fertilizer, seeds, cotton clothes and comforters were distributed to flood victims in Gushi County and Xi County. Also, 1,594 houses were built for them.

#Two Tzu Chi childcare clinics were built, one in Kaifong County and the other in Xinmi City.

Henan was also one of the provinces badly devastated during the floods in May and June 1991. As a matter of fact, the Tzu Chi fact-finding team found that conditions in Xinyang County were even worse than those in Quanjiao County, Anhui Province, and Xinghua County in Jiangsu Province. Moreover, as the saying goes, "Misfortunes never come singly." They had a serious drought in November of that year. After the survey, Tzu Chi decided to include Xi County and Gushi County in their relief lists.

In early January 1992, a Tzu Chi relief team went to Henan to distribute relief supplies. Within three days they distributed money, rice coupons, cotton jackets and trousers, and comforters to forty thousand victims. It was a fulfillment of Master Cheng Yen's idea of delivering relief supplies to those who suffer the most. The arrival of the Tzu Chi relief team left an indelible impression in the minds of the victims. Their grateful attitude made Tzu Chi members all the more enthusiastic in doing their work.

In addition to the relief materials, the foundation built two Tzu Chi villages of 1,954 houses in the counties of Xi and Gushi. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in June 1992 and construction of the villages was completed on November 28 and 29. The victims moved into their new homes before the cold winter set in.
