The Caravan Guide

However, the desert stretched beyond the horizon and was full of danger. If they went off course even a little bit, they would surely die. So they hired a guide who was familiar with the route.

Before they entered the desert, they had to go over a mountain. On the mountain, there was a village in which the people still had the custom of offering sacrifices to Heaven. Each year, they used one man as the sacrifice. They would put him on an altar and cut off his head. The caravan just happened to pass by that village during the annual ritual. The villagers surrounded the caravan and threatened to kill them all unless they would give one man for the sacrifice.

All the members of the caravan were relatives. Which one would they choose as the sacrifice? One of the members suggested that since the guide was not one of their relatives, why not hand him over? So they pushed the guide out of the caravan. The villagers took the poor man away and used him as the sacrifice. After that, they let the caravan go on its way.

The caravan left the mountain and entered the desert, but they didn't know which direction to go. They walked around and around under the scorching sun, but they couldn't find their way out of the desert. After a few days, they ran out of food and water and finally, one by one, they all died.

For ordinary people, living in this world filled with anxieties and disasters is just like being lost in a hot desert or floating aimlessly on a dangerous sea. Only wisdom can lead us out of our ignorance and anxiety and enable us to reach the other shore, a place full of light and peace. The best way to increase wisdom is to stop chasing after the wealth and prestige of this world and to learn good dharma and do good deeds. Virtue brings people peace and good fortune. When we do good deeds, we help others and at the same time purify ourselves.
