The Scarf
By Masters Te Yu and Te Mao
Translated by Cathy Huang

In the early days, the only vehicle the Abode of Still Thoughts had was a bicycle.

The bicycle had no lamp on it because the nuns could not afford one.

Oftentimes, Master Te Tzu had to clench her teeth and pedal hard through the chilly wind in the dark.

One day, an old lady saw Te Tzu wearing thin clothes in the wintry weather. She lent the nun a scarf to keep her warm in the freezing wind.

When Te Tzu returned home, Master Cheng Yen saw the scarf around her neck, but did not utter a word about it.

Before long, Cheng Yen gave another nun some money to buy yarn and asked her to knit a scarf for Te Tzu.

Te Tzu was deeply moved. "The Master did that for me even though we didn't have any spare money..."

Ever since then, the Master's warm love has always been with the disciple, even in the chilly wind.
