| Visiting The Poor Thirty Years Ago | |||
| Written by Te-yu Shih Translated by Norman Yuan Back when Tzu Chi first started in Hualien, there were no motorcycles and no telephones. There was only a heart wishing to light a lamp for all creatures in darkness. Master Cheng Yen always visited the poor personally, along with one disciple. The disciples who stayed at the Abode of Still Thoughts did not know the exact time their Master would be back. So each time the bus was to come, two of them would walk out to the main road and wait. The first bus came and left. There was no sign of the Master. The disciples had to go back to the Abode. When the second bus was about to arrive, again two disciples went to the main road. Again they came back without the Master. The third bus arrived. Two disciples rushed happily to the road. The Master had to be on that bus because it was the last one of the evening. Finally, the hardworking Master and the three devoted disciples walked in the moonlight back to the Abode. |
