Chiku Wetland is where the Pingnan Industrial Zone will be built. The area has
abundant fish and is also an excellent outdoor classroom for studying natural
habitats. Once the industrial zone is built, everything here will be destroyed.
Industries will consume 320,000 tons of water a day, the same amount used by one
million people in a day. The amount will certainly put more pressure on the
already tightening water-shortage problem in southern Taiwan. Thus, local
environmentalists appeal to the government to rethink its industrial policy and
find a way that will allow sustainable use of water resources.
