Stele with Scenes of the Buddha Preaching

Northern Chou Dynasty (557 - 581)

This stele can be divided into three parts: top, center and bottom. The Buddha is preaching in the center part with four of his disciples and two bodhisattvas beside him. In the upper part are three bodhisattvas and eight disciples. Two hornless dragons wind around the head of the stele. Worshippers are placed at the bottom. Just below the Buddha are two yakshas (malevolent spirits), holding an incense burner and flanked by two lions.
