| Translated by Michelle Chen Illustrated by Lin Chien-ju Whenever
the faithful butler approached the site where thetreasure was buried, he
would become hysterical and swear...In a town in the mountains, there once lived a wealthy landowner. He had a wife who was much younger than he, and they had a son. One day, the aging landowner thought: "My wife is still quite young. After I die, what will happen to my child if she remarries and my estate falls into the hands of a stranger?" The wealthy landowner finally came up with a brilliant idea. He secretly told his butler to load all of his treasure onto a cart and bury it in a secret location. "Keep this a secret," the wealthy landowner warned his butler. "Once my son comes of age, you can take him to recover the treasure." The faithful butler nodded in agreement. A few years later, the wealthy landowner passed away. One day, the wife of the deceased landowner came to her now grown-up son. "You are now old enough to become the master of the house. I overheard your father tell the butler to bury his treasure somewhere. Go tell him to dig it up." The young master checked the matter with the old butler. "Is it true that my father once had you bury some of our family treasure? Where is it? Can you lead me to the site?" The old man was obliged to lead his young master there. But once they arrived at the site, the old butler changed his mind. He felt that the treasure rightfully belonged to the deceased master and should not be so easily taken away by the young master and his mother. He began to act hysterically, and he even started swearing at his young master. It was a complete change from his normally respectful, faithful manner. The young master was perplexed by the old butler's behavior. He suppressed his own anger and told the old man to take him back home. A few days later, observing that the butler was back to his normal respectful self, the young man once again asked him to retrieve the treasure. However, when they arrived near the place, the butler, still unwilling to let his young master have the treasure, again flew into hysterics and severely cursed his young master. Unsure of what to do, the young master returned home empty-handed for the second time. As soon as they got home, the butler reverted to his old respectful self. Annoyed, the young master went to another elder in the town for advice. After listening to the young man's story, the wise man told him, "Ask the butler again to take you to the treasure. The place where he starts yelling at you will be the spot where the treasure is buried." Just as the elder predicted, when they arrived at the site the third time, the old butler again began to swear violently. But this time, the young master ignored the old man's strange behavior. He began digging at the very spot where the butler was standing and soon found the treasure. The young master reflected on the incident and saw that all that wealth
was a source of strife and trouble. Life without the treasure was
peaceful. If it could alter the mindset of a faithful servant, wouldn't it
also bring unexpected difficulties to his whole family? The young master
decided to donate all the treasure to the poor and needy.
When we have enough to share, we should learn to share wisely. When we are healthy, we should make good use of our bodies to do good deeds and be of service to those in need. Let's not waste our life. |
