The Father of Taiwan's New Literature
Dr, Lai was a caring doctor. At hte end of each year, he burnt patients' unpaid
bills and gave most of his income to the poor and needy. he also wrote
extensively about how the Japanese colonial government suppressed the Taiwanese
people, hoping to awaken the consciences of his countrymen. He only wrote in
Chinese and was known as the Father of Taiwan's New Literature. Some even
praised him as a combination of mahatma Gandhi, Albert Schweitzer and Voltaire.
