Dr. George Gushue-Taylor
1883-1954
Father of Leprosy Treatment in Taiwan
Dr. Taylor and his wife devoted themselves to curing patients with leprosy. In
1927, with help from the Presbyterian Church of England, he established the
Happy Mount Colony leprosarium, the first of its kind in Taiwan, in the Taipei
suburb of Pali. In 1954, Dr. Taylor passed away on the ship taking him back home
to his native Canada. Before he died, he asked to be buried "in Formosa,
the place I love the most." The captain sailed the ship back to Taiwan and
had this missionary's body buried at Happy Mount.
