Rev. William Campbell
1841-1921
Protector of Taiwan's Blind
While practicing medicine and evangelizing in Tainan, Rev. Campbell was
constantly harassed by locals and once was almost stabbed to death. But he did
not give up. In 1891, he founded Taiwan's first school for the blind in Tainan.
He also invented Taiwanese braille and constructed and braillewriter. Rev.
Campbell devoted forty-one years of his life to Taiwan, during which he opened
the door to the study of physical disability in Taiwan.
