Dr. Huang Yu-chieh
1850-1918
Leading Chinese Herbal Doctor
Dr. Huang was the first Taiwanese to obtain a license for practicing traditional
Chinese medicine during the Japanese occupation of 1895-1945. He wrote books on
combating cholera and bubonic plague, which at that time were rampant in Taiwan.
Starting in 1900, Dr. Huang fervently worked to abolish the traditional Chinese
custom of binding the feet of women. By the end of 1915, over 480,000 women had
their feet unbound.
