George Leslie Mackey
1844-1901
Promoter of Taiwanese Modernization
In 1872, Dr. Mackay arrived in Tamsui from Canada. He devoted thirty years of
his life to "Taiwan, the place he loves." In 1879, he founded the
Mackay Clinic, the first modern hospital in northern Taiwan, and pulled 21,000
teeth out of Taiwanese mouths. In addition, he founded Oxford College and the
Tamsui Women's School, the first school for women in Taiwan. These schools were
milestones in Taiwan's modernization.
