Dr. James L. Maxwell
1836-1921
The First Seed of Western Medicine in Taiwan
The first missionary from the Presbyterian Church of the United Kingdom, Dr.
Maxwell evangelized and practiced medicine in Tainan. His arrival brought
Western medical science to Taiwan. In 1868 he established the Sinlau Christian
Hospital, which had an X-ray machine, an elevator for patients, and equipment
sterilized with steam. Dr. Maxwell and his two children devoted many years to
caring for the health of the Taiwanese people.
